Team History

The 2025-26 season was the 19th year for the Liberty High School Varsity Hockey program. In that time, Liberty has captured one State Championship, four District titles and advanced to the OHSAA State Final Four four times. In 2023 the Patriots defeated University School (6-2) to claim Central Ohio's first state championship in the 46 year history of the tournament. Since joining the Capital Hockey Conference in 2007, the Patriots have won the CHC Red Division 7 times ('10, '11, '13, '17, '22, '23, and '25), more than any other CHC team. Liberty captured the CBJ Cup in 2011, 2023, and 2025.

The 2025–26 Liberty varsity team finished 21-15-1 while continuing to compete among the top programs in Central Ohio. The Patriots advanced to the semifinals of the CHC Blue Jackets Cup and reached the OHSAA Columbus Regional Semifinal, where their season ended with a 3-1 loss to St. Charles.

The 2024–25 Patriots finished 26-10-2 and once again established themselves among Ohio’s top programs. Liberty finished tied atop the CHC Red Division standings and captured the Blue Jackets Cup championship with a dominant 6-0 victory over New Albany. The Patriots carried their postseason run to the OHSAA Columbus Regional Final before falling 5-3 to eventual state champion Upper Arlington.

Expectations were high for this year coming off a successful campaign last year, as 9 seniors return to the Patriots. Led by Co-Captain’s Ethan Hollingsworth and Christopher Bergamesca and Alternative Captain’s Noah Allmaras and Brock Rumbaugh. 

The team focused on winning the Capital Hockey Conference only to finish in a tie with a record of 15-1-1. Throughout the season there was a battle for the scoring leader. Brock Rumbaugh had 5 hat trick games, Christopher Bergamesca had 3 hat trick games. Brock Rumbaugh finished first with 40 goals while Christopher Bergamesca finished 38 goals. This year the Patriots set a record for most goals scored than any other season to date with 189 goals

Liberty Patriots beat Dublin Jerome in the District Championship game 4-3 in OT, with goals by Noah Allmaras, Christopher Bergamesca, Ethan Hollingsworth and Brock Rumbaugh. For the second time in their six year history, the Liberty Patriots are District Champions and playing in the OHSAA Ice Hockey State Final Four Tournament.

The Olentangy Patriots drew the Sylvania District champion for their semifinal game, the Sylvania Northview Wildcats. Fifth ranked Northview defeated eighth ranked Liberty 4-2 in the OHSSA ice hockey state semifinals on Friday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. The defending state champion Wildcats lost to Shaker Heights in the championship game. 

A recap of the game, Liberty scored first 1-0 with goal by Kyle Horner and assists given to Ethan Hollingsworth and Christopher Bergamesca. The Patriots continued to press and got another goal by Noah Allmaras with assists from Nick Kouskouris and Brock Rumbaugh. the first period ended with the Patriots leading 2-0. The Wildcats woke up in the second period and tied the score 2-2. The third period was won by Wildcats scoring two goals. Freshman Cam Perry made 19 saves in the game. Goalie Cam Perry finished the season with a record of 20-6-1, .936 SV % and 7 shutouts.

This was thought to be a rebuilding year as 8 players graduated plus 3 returning players left our program either moved out of area or an injury. We did have two players move into the district, Collins McDonald and Chris Clark from Texas plus Brock Rumbaugh decided to played for his high school instead of AAA Blue Jackets. Head Coach Jack Hoogeveen, Associate Head Coach Nick Kormanyos and Assistant Coach Mike Battaglia had their work cut out for them This young group was led by Captain Ethan Hollingsworth and Alternate Captain’s Pete Leonetti and Nick Ramsey.

This team started out 8-0 in the CHC league and eventually finished the regular season with a record of 12-4-1. Four players recorded Hat Tricks during the season, Ryan Jesi, Brock Rumbaugh(twice), Collins McDonald and Kyle Horner. Jack Gainor had a four goal game against Talawanda on 11/14/12.

The 2011-12 team played in four tournaments and made it to all of the Championship games. The Patriots won the Thomas Worthington MLK tournament with a combined score of 21 goals scored vs. 5 goals against, goalies Clark and Arcy. Their tournament record was 12-2-2 and they also played in the CBJ Cup Championship game but lost to Dublin Jerome 0-1.

Sophomore Chris Bergamesca led the team in goals (28) and assists (44) and freshman Brock Rumbaugh finished second in goals (23) and assists (38). Senior Goalie Eddie Arcy led the team with 7 shutouts and 3 assists.

The 2010/2011 season began with high expectations. The most experienced roster to date included 8 seniors (the “original 6” from the inaugural season) and three former AAA players who saw the potential of being a part of a special Liberty ice hockey season. In just three seasons, the Liberty ice hockey program had grown to be among the most respected and talented ice hockey teams in the Columbus District which includes Dayton and Cincinnati area teams. Team captain, Anthony Bergamesca, and alternate captain, Jimmy Ruska, were named by 4th year coaches Hoogeveen and Kormanyos to lead the campaign. The team did not disappoint finishing with a season record of 31 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie setting the season record for most wins. The team also piled up a season record 194 goals while giving up only 75. The team captured a share of the CHC regular season title with a record of 12-1. Liberty went on to win their first ever CBJ Cup tournament championship by defeating Dublin Coffman 3-2. The Patriots entered the OHSAA District tournament as the number 2 seed and advanced to the District title championship game against number 1 seed Dublin Jerome. Liberty became only the 4th Columbus area team to advance to the state final 4 by beating Jerome 3-2 in the 2nd overtime period on a goal by sophomore Marshall Oja. The Patriot hockey team also became the first team to accomplish what has become known as the “Hat Trick of Columbus High School Hockey” by winning the CHC regular season title, the CBJ cup championship, and the District championship. In the state semi-final game, the Patriots led Toledo St. Francis DeSales 2-1 after the first period on goals by freshman Chris Bergamesca and sophomore Ethan Hollingsworth. After 2 periods, the Patriots trailed 4-3 and ultimately fell to the eventual state champion Knights. On the season, Senior, Alec Vidrick set records for defensemen of most goals (9) and most points (21). Anthony Bergamesca and Robert Koehler graduated with a share of the plus/minus record (90). Koehler also holds the career point’s record for defensemen (64). Senior goaltender, Bryan Finneran, graduated holding the career record for wins (29). Junior goaltender, Eddie Arcy, set a single season record for lowest goals against average (1.40). The Patriots loaded up the All CHC honors with Anthony Bergamesca (senior defensemen), Eddie Arcy (junior goaltender), Jimmy Ruska (senior winger) and Chris Bergamesca (freshmen center) all being named to the first team. Senior defenseman Alec Vidrick was named to the 2nd team, and sophomore Ethan Hollingsworth received honorable mention.

The 2010/2011 season also saw the Liberty ice hockey program grow to include its first OHSAA sanctioned junior varsity team. The team played hard in its inaugural season and proved its worth by having a number of players join the varsity team as a number of key varsity players suffered season ending injuries. It could be said that without the addition of the sanctioned junior varsity team, the varsity team may not have enjoyed the success that it did. As we enter the 2011/2012 season, junior varsity players will certainly be asked to once again skate hard and to be ready to help out the varsity team when needed.

Through the teams’ first four years, the Patriots have won a Capital Hockey Conference league best 46 games to go against only 8 losses. Five of those losses came in the first season as the Patriots have lost only a single CHC league game in each of the last 3 seasons. The Patriots also hold school district bragging rights for hockey with a combined record of 11-0 over Olentangy and Olentangy Orange.

Taking the ice was a team that graduated a large class of 7 seniors. The season looked to be a rebuilding year as the team opened the season with a record of only 2 wins and 7 losses before the start of league play. Led by captain Nick Zanetos and alternate captains Logan Singleton and Ben Saylor, the Patriots quickly turned the season around and captured their first overall CHC league championship with a league record of 11-1 over runner-up Coffman (10-2). The team allowed a single season record low 64 goals against. Season ending all CHC conference recognition went to senior Ben Saylor (F) and Anthony Bergamesca (D) as 2nd team award winners. Receiving honorable mention were seniors Nick Zanetos (F), Logan Singleton (D), and Nick Kerr (G).

The Patriots took the ice with an improved team that lost just one senior from the previous year. The 2008/2009 hockey Patriots were led by captain Doug Kouskouris and alternate captain Justin Garland. Liberty posted a 15-1 CHC league record and won the Blue Division regular season championship over runner-up Dublin Jerome (13-2-1). Playing in just their second Blue Jackets Cup (the CHC league championship tournament), the Patriots advanced to the championship game against number 1 seed Dublin Coffman before a standing room only crowd at the Ice Haus. Coffman scored an empty net goal with less than a minute to play to hold off the Patriots hope of their first CBJ Cup championship. The team also earned their second runner-up finish in as many years in the Chiller Thanksgiving tournament. On the season, Liberty finished with an improved overall record of 25 wins against 15 losses. Individual highlights included a couple of single season records which still stand today – Alex Ottavio, most goals (37); Doug Kouskouris, most assists (39), most points (68). Goaltender Nick Kerr set the single season record for wins (14). Doug Kouskouris also holds the career record for most goals (64), most assists (70), and most points (132). 1st team all CHC honors were awarded to seniors Doug Kouskouris (F) and Alex Ottavio (F). Senior goaltender, Brandon Rivington and sophomore defensemen Anthony Bergamesca and Robert Koehler all received honorable mention.

In the summer of 2007, with the assistance of Olentangy schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Davis, the OLSD approved Liberty High School’s request to form the districts first OHSAA varsity ice hockey team. Just a few months later, 16 players took to the ice to compete for the Patriots in the inaugural Patriot ice hockey season. The team, coached by Jack Hoogeveen and Nick Kormanyos, consisted of 1 senior (team captain Patrick Kouskouris), 7 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 6 freshmen. The team posted a season record of 16 wins and 15 losses. Highlights of the season included finishing runner-up with a record of 3-1 in their first Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament hosted by The Chiller ice rinks, a 3-2 victory over Thomas Worthington in their first ever Capital Hockey Conference league game, a 5-2 victory in their first ever home opening game over Upper Arlington and the teams’ first tournament championship at an MLK weekend event hosted by Strongsville High School. Patrick Kouskouris (D) became the first Liberty player to be named 1st Team All CHC! Junior Doug Kouskouris (F) earned 2nd team honors while juniors Justin Garland (F) and Brandon Rivington (G) were given honorable mention.
